Google Cyclists Get a Smoother Ride with EZ-Conveyor™

Background

Google’s Real Estate and Workplace Services (REWS) is known for investing in sustainable commuting options, especially cycling. At their flagship Googleplex campus in Mountain View, CA, employees have access to a first-class bike room as part of their active transport infrastructure.

But there was one catch: a long staircase was the only way in.

To improve safety and usability for riders (especially those using heavier eBikes), Google partnered with Kinetic Parking Solutions to install a better access system.

  • Customer: Google REWS
  • Location: Googleplex, Mountain View, CA
  • Solution: EZ-Conveyor™ + custom gutter brush system
  • Install and Electrical by: DW Nichols
  • Completed: November 2024
  • Status: In use by Google cyclists
  • Staircase length: 2 Sections, 1 landing, total length of ~28’ (9.0m)
  • Incline: 30.3°

Challenge

The only access to the bike room was a long staircase with outdated metal channels meant to guide bike wheels. These worked “okay” for traditional bikes, but as electric bikes and heavier gear became more common, the setup became unsafe and frustrating. Riders had to muscle their bikes up the stairs or risk letting them roll too fast on the way down. The user experience didn’t match the quality of the bike parking facility itself.

Before Installation:

Solution

Kinetic supplied and coordinated the installation of the EZ-Conveyor™, a powered conveyor system that safely transports the bike uphill—no lifting or pushing required. Riders simply guide their bike onto the belt, and the system does the rest.

And for safe descent, we added the EZ-Conveyor™ Brush System, a proprietary braking feature that slows the wheels as the bike rolls down, giving riders better control without strain or risk.

The system was installed by DW Nichols, a certified Kinetic partner, with minimal disruption to the building and no change to the existing bike room.

After Installation:

Results

The system is now live and in use. Riders, especially those using heavier eBikes, can now move safely and confidently between the street level and the bike room. Access is smoother. Commutes are easier. And the infrastructure now matches the experience Google wants to offer.

Final Installation:

Impact

This project reflects a broader shift: large campuses are rethinking access, safety, and convenience for people on bikes. The EZ-Conveyor™ proves that small upgrades done right can remove barriers and encourage more sustainable commuting. And when leaders like Google make these changes, others take notice.
